A script for when doctors dismiss you

I've started using this in appointments: 'I understand you may not have a diagnosis for me today. What I need is for this symptom to be documented in my notes, and to discuss what criteria would need to be met for a referral to [specialist]. Can we do that?' It's changed the dynamic. Doctors respond to precision. Vague complaints get vague responses. Specific requests get specific answers. Not always, but more often.

For me it was preparing! I come with a list of 3 things I want to achieve during the appointment, could be a prescription, a referral and a question, those are top priority, of those are met I have “spare” questions. When I come prepared it’s a bit harder for me to get dismissed.
